Wow, skip one news day and the whole city goes to turmoil. I read in my now 1 day old issue of the Medicine Hat News that Ted Grimm has decided to throw his hat in the ring and run for mayor. I bet Blogs are not a part of his political experience, but medhatblog wasn’t included in his press release, unless Skeet is holding out on me. For those of you who think thats funny - it started happening slowly, but the blog is e-mailed press releases fairly regularly now a days. ah well no biggie. I like Ted Grimm, have met him a few times and he is a nice man - I am sure most people who lived in Medicine Hat prior to 2001 have met him.
I have thoughts on this and a few topics for the fall election - I think a strong race for mayor with credible candidates will be good for the city, but I reserve comment on this particular development for a little bit longer…now to some homework.
Open Letter to Mr Grimm,
I am just a humble blogger at medhatblog.com I am passionate about our community and through sheer force of blind luck - us bloggers seem to have the ear of several thousand voters for the next election. I don’t know how “high tech” you are or if you have ever read this blog, but if you could e-mail dangermousemh@gmail.com - I would like to ask you some questions.
Its a small town yet somehow Ted Grimm is someone I don’t have direct personal contact with, but I bet my “Ted Grimm number” is no higher than 2 - someone out there is bound to know him personally, but since he was retired, I don’t actually have an e-mail address for him - maybe someone out there could let him know I would like to talk to him. (six degrees of Ted Grimm starting now…)
/if that all sounded like jibberish just google “Kevin Bacon Number”
I met Ted Grimm back while he was mayor at the Medicine Hat Police Ball. That was the only time I met him in person. So I really don’t know him at all. Few months ago I can’t rememeber the topic but a few of us were bickering at each other and KJ said that guy for mayor. While I posted I rather have Ted Grimm back as mayor. That was more of a sarcastic jester then anything. We all know what Grimm has done or what he is like at the mayor job. We know what Bill Cocks has done and what he is like and says as an Alderman. Would Cocks really change I don’t know. However between Grimm and Cocks I pick Grimm.
Old Ted must be running low on cash and has some more property to sell to the city.
Do we as a city really need to make that particular mistake again?
Unbelievable!!
truenorthern has an excellent point. I was finally glad to be rid of Grimm when he stepped down. But given a choice between what we have today and Grimm I’d pick Grimm. However I’d sure like to think that there’s someone in this city who can do a better job than both Vallely or Grimm.
You can tell that Grimm has been very frustrated with the way Vallely/city council has been running the city. I really liked what he said about the new arena in the paper yesterday, that it was questionable to think about building when the city and the masers aren’t even on the same page and that it was motivated merely by popular demand not by whether or not it was a sound decision. I think his motiviations for wanting the post back are pure, but man alive isn’t there someone out there who doesn’t have his shady, corrupt past that could do the job well?
I would like to say I am surprized but given Medicine hats situation it is only Logical that Bill Cocks and ted grimm are running in an election that Garth Valley wouldnt be got dead in. what do I know I’m just the guy that squatted a few places to get my point accross. when the status quo dismissed my claims as a vagrant not worth an opinion. i started up an outreach program called blessing. But for some reason (Dads will Dated Nov.9 1980, my moms 55 birthday) They refused to except my interpertation of God will. So I confronted the issue head and Ran in the last election with my claims of coruption and the fact if the actions of jack austin in relation to the dec 9 will being thrown out saying that Harry veiner wishes were that of a senile old man. And now we need to have a good front man for this unvalid corupt reminence of what Dad put to gether. So your choices are a lawyer that was part of the confusion in the last twenty years of medicine hat history since december 9 1980. or the actual front man that was there in the begining and at that time his Brother Gary was my Polictical Science Teacher at Irvine School. I tell you this one thing whether I run in the next election with these men or stage a protest to halt the election by chalenging the validity of its corruptive overt past.
Bill Cocks still thinks the City should pay for, and shoe horn a new events center, between the local jail and my house.(drop it Bill I am not moving)
If Ted gets voted in. I can see Grimm times ahead for the CAPCS infestation of City Hall.
If only these two run. I think you all know who I would pick.
when given the Choice of the lesser of the two evils only a fool would except that reality of the democratic function. When you know this ..there are avenues open for legislative reform. The truth will set you free from your delema
I read in the paper that peanuts is not happy with Teds choice of words for the workings of the city council. Too bad, so sad. Constructive criticism.
Ted Grimm taught me English 20 way back in the day.
In the ’70’s, Grimm figured that the City should be the only one owning and selling land. There was another land developer by the name of Tom Sunderland, who disagreed. He bought up Schlenker’s land (now known as Ross Glen), sub-divided, and lots were sold.
Anyone remember Sunderland?
Anyway, Grimm did not play nice. He didn’t like ‘Hat Development’, and Sunderland had to play by a different set of rules. The City expropriated a huge chunk of his land to re-route the highway. They could have chosen another route but hey, it was Tom Sunderland, so that’s the land the City took.
I believe all that bickering cost the tax payers a king’s ransom in lawyer fees.
I think Grimm’s time has past. I don’t want Bill Cocks or Ty Schneider, (who is supposedly going to announce his candidacy) in there either.
Today, I heard Chief Boucher on the radio. He may jump into the mix. If he does, I think I’ll be leaning in his direction.
I really don’t want Grimm either but but between Cocks who wants to knock down houses to build a new arena by the police station, Ty Schneider who is a CAPCS sympathiser I would pick Grimm. However if Boucher ran I would very well consider leaning to him as well.
Its all illusion when it comes to own what and who can develope whatever. You mention Sutherland and he borrored money on land he didnt own..and when the Bank figured it out. The Elks scandel and the treasure dissapearing. or how about the manager of Hat Devopement Garth Valeley or at least according to the Henderson directories. But for as many men in Medicine Hat thats claimed ritches not long after come a comvicted Banker or a convient fire. The old hospital travel that path and so did the old arena Jewish lighting and our trusty insurance companies
I really don’t want Grimm either but but between Cocks who wants to knock down houses to build a new arena by the police station, Ty Schneider who is a CAPCS sympathiser I would pick Grimm. However if Boucher ran I would very well consider leaning to him as well. the problem with this coment is the the union of completely dead works and I will explain why Ty sneider felt it was more effective to use his contacts in the Hells angel organization to get back his stolen computers that his former work mates. I sure there was no Due Dillegence exersized but it was effective. so if you start conecting the dots and try to camoflause it as religion it wont work
Aug 5 - Watch and Pray
“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
(Matthew 26:41)
Dear Jerry,
Have you ever been frustrated with the weaknesses of your flesh? Have you ever resolved never more to yield to a particular sin, yet when the temptation came, you fell right back into it?
It’s happened to all of us. Even the disciple Peter. He swore he would never deny Jesus…but he did it anyway, time and time and time again.
There is, however, something we can do to keep from falling prey to temptations like that. We can “watch and pray.” That’s what Jesus told Peter and the other disciples to do in the Garden of Gethsemane. He knew they were about to be tempted, and He knew that the weakness of their flesh would overcome them if they didn’t strengthen their spirits through prayer.
That’s true for you and me too. That’s why in Jude 20 and 21, God tells us much the same thing that Jesus told the disciples that night. He says, “But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith… praying in the Holy Spirit: Guard and keep yourselves in the love of God” (The Amplified Bible). God knows even better than we do that our flesh has been trained to flow with the world’s stream. He knows that even though our born again spirits are reaching for God, our untrained flesh will always have a tendency to fall into sin.
So, He’s given us the ability to pray in other tongues, to strengthen our spirit and build it up until it takes ascendancy over our flesh. As we pray in the Spirit, Romans 8:26 tells us, the “(Holy) Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf” (The Amplified Bible).
Is it any wonder the Apostle Paul said, “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all!” (1 Cor. 14:18). It is one of the most powerful tools God has given us.
So don’t neglect to use it. Follow the instruction in Ephesians 6:18 and pray “always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit…watching thereunto with all perseverance.”
Don’t make the mistake that Peter made. When temptation comes to your door, don’t let it catch you sleeping. Be prepared. Make sure your spirit is strong enough to rise above it.
Scripture Study: Matthew 26:30-44
Banks don’t lend money to people for land they don’t own.
Are you for real?
Also, save the scriptures. There is such a thing as separation of church and state.
Religion has no place in politics, period.
Well as Max Lucado put it ‘you can mix horse manure (politics) and ice creme (christianity) and it doesnt hurt the manure any.. but it sure ruins the ice-creme’
I want to say something to Mr.Craig Veiners credit and go back to the last election he mentioned. In that case it was rumoured that Mr Craig Viener was to be held up in jail so that he could not run and thereby Mayor Vallely could be Acclaimed. Mr.Knox ensured a race but Mr. Veiner, it turned out, was free to run too.
Ok.
I heard a lot of people refering to those two candidates as ‘joke candidates’ or ‘protesters’ or ‘publicity stunts’.
Wrong. (mostly)
The only real ‘joke’ would be a Mayor getting acclaimed without a vote taking place, something described as ‘immoral’ in any democracy.
No other name on the ballot is the worst ‘joke’ you can have.
Now having said all that it might still be said that either Craig or Knox were being ridiculous or ‘talking crazy’ with these warnings about increasing Crack addiction, crime rates or impending ‘ghettos’.
Crazy silly stuff hahahah… Oh… OOPS!
Turns out the ‘protest candidates’ were not so crazy after all and darn well became ‘prophetic’ in light of three passing years that have seen horrific crack and crime rearing its ugly head.
200 hours of Council time spent on ‘Bikini Bylaws’ to get Food Plus or Macs to hide Maxim Magazine… and both stores get robbed at gunpoint in the mean time.
Yeah.. Im sure glad we focused on Bikini covers instead of something like sayyy.. ARMED ROBBERS THREATENING TO KILL THE STOREOWNERS!
Yes indeedy drugs had plenty to do with it too.
They had a lot to do with the Steinke horrors too.
But,
By all means the next time the ‘weird protest’ candidate goes off about how crack and drugs are running rampant… just remember he was right (in so far) the last time.
Meanwhile the ‘mainstream’ candidates said absolutely nothing about that.
Nothing.
They wont even allude to it.. its as if its not real and doesnt exist.
Grimm:
I really do want to get back on topic so let me say that Im not interested in Grimm getting in there.
My main reason though.. we absolutely NEED to get a new generation going here.
We NEED people who are fresh and eager and thinking in terms of a 100,000 population city with big crime problems (our next wave) drugs, gangs but also ‘big city’ standardised roadways, signs, intersections and infrastructure.
This will ’sound’ funny but believe it or not Id like to see Council that are NOT ‘Old Skool Hatter Society’ but more new people ‘immigrants’ from bigger cities and especially a few younger people.
Of course we do have a confidence in the famous city names, families and ‘our long term business people’.
Yes, that is important too but we have to transition here.
The city is booming and its changing. Its going to be a little metropolis with more new names and new businesses and the majority of people being those who chose to move here.
Lets get a Municipal Gov that reflects that please.
wow it amazing what comes out when wisdom is sought
squissy sorry about your embaressment about God words ! maybe being deaf are in your prayer. . oh thats right you don’t want to hear those things then let let this be a special surprise you seek
Jerryveiner now you walking on a thin layer of ice. Squisshy never said anything bad about religion at all. Just that Church and State have no business working side by side in politics. I believe in God but when you are always as in you Jerry are always pushing religion on us now everytime a single word comes out of your mouth has come to far. I will thank God that I hope you never run for any position in government. Your probably just as wack as any members of CAPCS.
Proximo, the thought is a good one, but how do you get anyone reputable under 40 to run. And then how are they going to get elected with all the seniors voting and saying that just because they are young, they dont know what they are doing. I would love to see a 30-50 council. Dont think it will ever happen.
Jerry, I dont know what the heck you are rambling about, but religion and politics dont mix. Take a look at the problems in the middle east.
Speaking of Sunderland, was it not Milt Reinhardt who was mayor at the time of Hat Development and all the land acquisitions?
Speaking of Sunderland, was it not Milt Reinhardt who was mayor at the time of Hat Development and all the land acquisitions?
Possibly in the beginning, Hart. I’d have to ask my dad about that one.
What I do know is that Grimm and Sunderland did not see eye to eye. Many battles were fought on the taxpayer dime. When Sunderland’s land was expropriated, Grimm was mayor.
….and Jerry….
If your father was indeed Harry Veiner, he was a kind and generous man. He was also very wise. This city owns their own utilities because of him. He was mayor of this city for many years and He NEVER let his religion interfere with his political life.
You could take a page from his book.
I think Darren Hirsch would make a good mayor. He seems to have good business sense and common sense. He is not driven by organizations like CAPS etal and he’s no shrinking violet.
Cocks is one who thinks we need to pay more taxes. I believe he wanted to join up with Calgary and Edmonton in an effort to give cities the power to implement more user fees.
Typical Liberal. They always have their hands in our pockets!
Good one Squisshy.
yeah good post Squisshy
Oh where to start with this election issue. Well to start we need a better choice of mayoral candidates to begin with. I have very mixed feelings with Grimm. He ran a tight ship during his tenure as mayor and kept the utilities in check and is what drove him to throw his hat in the ring again. He showed strong leadership though may have strong armed a few in the past. Leadership has been severely lacking since Vallely took the reins 6 years ago. I have always questioned the sale of the property across from Riverside park to Medican for almost less than half the price the city bought it for, and then never developed (though Medican has just recently lost the land because of it) yet had other developers willing to pay the asking price. Under Ted’s leadership I’m sure the adult bylaw would have been dealt with in the proper manner and an alderman conflict of interest/special interest groups would not have been allowed to corrupt that process.
I found the comments he made in the paper regarding leadership, utilities, and the proposed arena interesting and gratifying but disturbed at the lack of other points I feel needs to be addressed as important issues. This city needs to attract more jobs; jobs that are not reliant on the oil industry ad are long term, pensionable positions that will attract a younger work force. In Grimm’s last few years he did little to attract these types of employers and we are paying the price for that as there have been very little movement in that direction. I would hate to think of what will happen (maybe not in my lifetime) when the oil industry collapse/runs dry, not just in the province but particularly in Medicine Hat. We have all of our eggs in one basket and need to diversify fast as the infrastructure (and mentality) needs to be in place before we can attract such jobs/business.
Grimm scoffed at John Hamel for such words in a previous election and my fear is he will once again sit back and push the small city retirement agenda as in the past. Being a nice guy and a strong leader should not be the only credentials for mayor.
Bill Cocks is a nice guy as well but from a reputable insider I understand he voted for the Adult Material Bylaw (the zoning issue) 5 years ago only in a failed ploy to shut another alderman (Smith) up, and to me that makes for poor politics. The fact he realized his mistake in believing Smiths special interest group would let the issue drop did not happen and then voted against the follow up Magazine bylaw does not clean the political slate.
CAPCS have sworn they will inject candidates into this election and it will be the public who needs to weed out the ones from their camp as I have known from past experience they do not do things up front and above board. Despite their threat to make it an issue they have remained silent and I am sure it will continue that way until AFTER the election. Despite their nomenclature they are not the proprietors of “Positive Community Standards”. They will continue to corrupt democracy from within, despite their demand for (and warped interpretation of) democracy.
As for the other possible mayoral candidates I reserve comment as I do not know them and will decide on any later. However if Graham Kelly (since he hinted an interest- as long as Grimm was not) indicated a second interest to run for mayor, I would have to voice a strong “no way” as he did nothing as alderman in his 20 plus years. His politics’ is also questionable, not just with the magazine/adult bylaw but with the downtown youth centre, to name a few. If you can not be honest and upfront and then play the democracy card then stay out of any elected office. Out with the old and in with the new in this case is a positive thing.
A very good candidate for Mayor to me would be Larry Godin. A strong leader and one who knows the municipal government book inside and out.
Once my papers clear my employers desk I will be announcing my intent to run for alderman.
Good post Jim, and you’ve got my vote.
I personally will not be voting for anyone with a religious background (unless Mr Ogsten has one). We need to rid the council of the CAPCS agenda. While they worried about bikini bylaws and other such nonsense measures the real business of making this city run smoothly was completely forgotten. I know it’s possible for a person to have a religious background and to not buy into the CAPCS horse crap, but I won’t be taking the chance that they’ll be installing more fanatics that don’t care about the city’s prosperity and only want to push their own drive to clean up ’sin city’.
I’d also like to mirror Jim’s thoughts on Grimm. To me the two major black marks on Grimm’s tenure as mayor was the property across from riverside park debacle and the fact that Grimm has always gone out of his way to ensure that Medicine Hat stays a nice retirement village and has never tried to attract pensionable jobs. Our entire workforce is either service related or oilfield related, and that’s a direct result of Grimm’s actions. But given the choice between Cocks, Kelly or Grimm, I’ll take Grimm.
My views of the current aldermen and who should be reelected or not:
Cocks- Nice guy, hard worker but do not care for his politics of council voting. Is out of the running for aldermen since he is going for the mayor position unless he does a John Hamill and changes that decision come nomination time. Be that as it may I would still not vote for him. Sorry Bill.
Dumanowski- Despite his youth and education he has no credibility. He makes “emotional” rants and says nothing about nothing. He doesn’t have a grasp of his position and fails to research issues before speaking. Disturbingly he is quick to make accusatory remarks such as the case with the magazine issue with his spineless “if we (the public) are not for this bylaw we are against the protection of our children” remarks and then does not have to courage (guts) to retract those statements as offensive as they were. While he insists on comparing apples to oranges he is incapable of identifying the differences himself and replies on poor, incomplete and, as with the CAPCS issue, slanderous studies in forming his predetermined decisions. While he may not be a card carrying CAPCS member he is certainly following their goals and tactics. Not alderman I trust under any conditions and I hope this time signage will not sway votes his way. This is one alderman I do not want to see re-elected.
Friesen- Julie has served 4 terms as alderman and feel it is time to move on. Nice person but not a strong leader. It was under her leadership as chair of the Public Services Committee (PSC) that the adult material bylaw (with regards to the review/zoning issue) became the fiasco it became. While she did admit to me that it was not one of her prouder moments in government the damage was done. This has also proper gated into other issues like the skateboard bylaw, the Roadhouse, and the Ponds (the cost rocketing from ¼ million to 1 million) to name a few. Granted this was also the result of Vallalys lack of leadership if should also fall on the alderman who chaired the PSC shoulders as well.
Sorry Julie.
Hamill- While some like him got his stand against councils decisions I for one know he screwed up on the adult bylaw and should have bee more vocal. The issue was not the bylaw itself (as I have insisted it was not about porn) but by how council treated the issue which went against the municipal government act and this he failed to do and in fact confused the whole issue. If you want to back a position don’t back out halfway through it. He did vote for the bylaw drafting back in November along with seven others so again let’s not call a spade a spade unless you are willing to go all the way. Sorry this has been my observation over the past 6 years and I think it is time for John to move on. Plus he earlier said that this term was his last. Or is it? Which side of the fence is he sitting?
Hirsh- Very nice guy would like to see him run again but have heard he has other irons in the fire and no time for them and council. Only one on council who thinks things out.
Kelly- Did nothing as an alderman for his first two decades on council suddenly decided we needed jobs when he ran for mayor 6 years ago and thankfully was out of office for those 3 years. It was he that sided with CAPCS in their campaign for banning adult businesses and it is he that called these businesses “another form of prostitution” . He would just recently chastise council for one moment coddling youth and then call them drug addicts and thugs, yet he has done likewise in the past. This is one alderman I do not trust. He commented to store owners there was no need for a magazine bylaw and then voted for it only to claim a need for democratic justice. Time to retire Graham.
Smith- I credit her for her hard work but her politics and sense of democracy I have issues with. She has a nasty habit of degrading the public if they do not like her “politics”. Telling seniors to shut up and quite whining and other crass statements is her folly. As for the conflict of interest and the CAPCS issue I have already stated my mistrust of politicians who play the grey areas to achieve their “vision”.
Speers- Very nice guy but no leadership. Reminds me of the “Joe who” days. Two terms is enough.
I admire the fact that you didn’t back down re: CAPS, Jim. I read the wiki piece on you and just shook my head. How such ‘religious’ people could write such nasty words is beyond me.
That being said, I have a few questions for you.
1.) How would have you have handled the utility increases?
2.) If Bill Cocks becomes mayor and puts forward a proposal to increase user fees and taxes, how would you vote?
3.) The city has not been prepared for the growth we have experienced. At times, lots for sale have been nominal which impedes new construction. How would you deal with that?
(Proximo, the thought is a good one, but how do you get anyone reputable under 40 to run. And then how are they going to get elected with all the seniors voting and saying that just because they are young, they dont know what they are doing)
If people under 40 run, then people under 40 need to get out and vote. To many young hatters complain but don’t vote. When we vote don’t vote for eight candidates if you don’t like eight.
Ted Grimm is not the answer. He thinks he is the answer, but he is not. The construction industry suffered due to his lack of growth policy. We are still suffering becuase of what was implemented during his years. This thinking that we don’t sell land or work with business has given the city a bad rap. That needs to change. If Grimm and his councils had decided to sustain utilities there wouldn’t have been such big increases in the last few years.
Can anyone prove Ty Schnieder is a CAPS sympathizer? I worry this issue will plague another election and we will not be able address the issues that should matter.
One of the most awesome thing about Medicine Hat is the high percentage of young people that vote in our Municipal elections. Many times we have had the highest youth turnout in Alberta and to the point other Cities have been asking us ‘how we do it’.
I was so proud of this city and the youth during our last Municipal election when I waited at my local gymnasium and (to my amazement) youth after youth, under 25s over and over again came marching in, one young guy walked from the College (about an hour uphill too) just so he could vote. I almost had ‘goosebumps’ seeing them come in and vote, one after another after another.
A local storeowner recounted her amazement and near disbelief when the ‘Meet the Candidates’ paper came out (same day as the infamous John Cartwright Mayoral candidate Show) - she sold out almost instantly as mostly young guys ‘raided’ the newstand claiming they could not wait to vote because ‘now I have a choice!’ and she described actual ‘cheering’ as if they were going to a Tigers game or something…Awesome!
Im so proud of this Cities youth and I just love the fact they confuse and baffle conventional trends like this heh!
I think most people might be surprised to find out that Seniors do not necessarily vote for the Oldest candidates.
Hirsh, Dumonowski, Raible (all under 40s) all did surprising well among some Seniors depending on which group and where.. but enough to see where some Seniors will support younger candidates.
I did want to say something to Hoople.. and really plead that he/she will please not allow CAPCS to become some representation of ‘Religion’.
No no.. not at all and while I can totally understand why you feel like you will be better safe than sorry to eliminate all ‘religious’ backgrounds.. I would plead with you to not allow CAPCS to ruin your trust and optimism or colour other candidates, who, if truth was told would be as against CAPCS mentality as much as you are.
Honestly.. most every other denomination of Christianity see’s this ‘Dominionism’ CAPCS type crap for what it is.
Heed Jim Ogston:
“CAPCS have sworn they will inject candidates into this election and it will be the public who needs to weed out the ones from their camp as I have known from past experience they do not do things up front and above board. Despite their threat to make it an issue they have remained silent and I am sure it will continue that way until AFTER the election. Despite their nomenclature they are not the proprietors of “Positive Community Standards”. They will continue to corrupt democracy from within, despite their demand for (and warped interpretation of) democracy.”
This will be answered in stages if you don’t mind
1. Utilities increases- Well let me tell you my jaw dropped when my approximately $175.00 November bill suddenly jumped to over $435.00 (after the $50 rebate) in February, and while I (actually my wife who does a great job at juggling the books) could cover the increase I am sure there are those that could not and had to borrow/cut back on necessities to make ends meet. Do we need huge increases like that? No. Do we (the city) need to increase the utilities? Unfortunately the gas is not renewable and is depleting fast. The city needs to replace its gas fields and now have to pay market value. These gas fields are up to 2 ½ hours away from the city and to bring them up to production etc will increase the costs and unfortunately the cost will be to the consumer. However that said I feel that there needs to be a cushion to prevent sudden increases that will not hurt the public/commercial consumers. In addition there should be some incentive program to offset the blow and also provide a green energy program. Cathy Smiths plan to jack the fees up fast and furious to punish those that “waste gas so they can walk around their homes in t-shirts and shorts” is not the correct way of getting people to reduce and conserve. Despite her claim that people are wasting gas the reality is many homes (many rented) are not adequately insulated or energy efficient (many of the wartime homes and pre 1975ish) and so some city incentive should be initiated to correct this unintentional waste of energy. These incentives are not just in the gas but applicable in the electric, water and waste management. While we still have the resources we should bring the standards up to soften the blow once we are at market value to offset the costs. My son in Edmonton was paying over $300 in gas alone so to some extent we are still have a “Medicine Hat advantage” in this area for the time being, but for how long? A huge increase all at once discourages businesses and irritates residential owners who must suddenly adjust scarce finances. The end result has to go to dual jobs and lower quality of life. With many jobs here paying low wages and no pensionable positions, disposable income is only a dream.
2. User fees and Taxes- Death and taxes are life’s only guarantee and while we can’t cheat death we can do something about taxes. Would I unilaterally raise taxes or impose/increase user fees without a proper review? No. Each user fee case/tax would be reviewed. User fees were responsible for the relocation of the show and shine (car show) from the downtown. I think it is a shame the city was the reason in being unbending resulting in this change. I also happen to feel the CCDA (City Centre Development Agency) is a not an effective Agency and a waste of taxpayers monies and the downtown businesses are not getting their moneys worth. Scrap the CCDA or rewrite their terms of reference. The downtown businesses/members should be given an option to remain or leave and if the CCDA is unable to go beyond flower pots and street signs then it is time to change their mandate or have the Chamber be their voice.
Imposing taxes for a mayors/alderman’s legacy (new arena/events centre) without a business plan or commitment from the main occupants and expecting the public to foot the entire bill through taxes is not acceptable. $30/month may sound like “peanuts” (Cathy Smith quote) to those with disposable income but to some it is a lot when they live from paycheck to paycheck and $30 is a bill payment or supper. As a single parent for 6 years I know how hard it is to make ends meet. I heard one arena supporter (during the public debate in city hall) state the arena should be built simply because he likes to play hockey in a new arena. If that is the logic for tax increases to cover capital projects I simply will not support it. Priorities on “must haves” go before “nice to haves”. Smith’s remarks to the public were unwarranted and offensive and if she and her daughter wonder why they received these perceived “death threats” then they only have to look at their remarks and understand why the other aldermen did not/do not get the same response. Curbing your scathing rants when things do not go your way may be a remedy.
3. City Growth- I for one fully support the growth of our city but it has to be controlled so as not to outstrip or outpace city services. Right now there are real concerns about fire services. Capital projects have to be built to provide protective services without infringing on the taxpayers pocketbooks. There is a need for a new fire hall in the North West and possibly the south center with many of the new housing/businesses now dangerously on the edge of the response time for the fire department. The members of the fire department got more politically involved in the last election because of their fears and concerns, justifiably so. Their union also has legitimate concerns, safety being one. With more and more “gated communities” in some of these new developments (and narrow streets) the department feels that even though some areas are within the favorable “response zones” the narrowness of the streets make it harder to navigate through, never mind the curving streets and streets with the same/similar names and therefore negate the low response timing. I have been asked by several taxpaying residences in these gated communities why they do not get city services even though they pay the same taxes as others. I would question it as well.
I am in favor of affordable housing, have attended meetings on such issues and campaigned for affordable housing in my last two election attempts (media only played up the porn issue) and would like to see some movement on this but do not support setting up potential “Slum” developments. In the same breath I would like to see land made available for people to develop luxury housing. Remember the bigger the more tax base they are and if they are willing and able to do so then why not.
The infrastructure needs to be put in place and if private businesses can help then great. I know of one that has expresses concerns about off site levies and maybe this should be reviewed with all parties involved. You can not maintain a small town mentality and expect seniors to foot the tax bill for all services because younger families have moved on. Jobs and development go hand in hand and while the city should not be in the Real Estate businesses they should be able to have the infrastructure in place to allow developers and large businesses to set up in as short as time as possible. The sooner they are in place the taxes they generate could then and will be used for our utility purchases and provide the level of essential services such as fire/police/youth centre / handicap services and senior care etc. that will improve the quality of life. If developers can help the city should be active in assisting and providing a service. Building infrastructure and then ripping it out and replacing it after businesses/residences are establish and creating upheaval and resentment is not productive and only costs more taxes that are best spent on new projects. Larger operation/businesses may be willing to assist in financing capital projects like a new arena. Relying on those on low incomes and on fixed income (seniors) is counter productive and offensive.
This council has alienated businessmen and the public, often pitting them against each other, and then sat back and played dumb.
Man can do or say anthing it wants, but Gods will is set in stone. Medicine Hat is now seeing that results of Crack and Meth and the youngest Murder Canada. Our past leadership has ignored the warnings. The future holds the Key and as long as it refuses the truth about the coruption of Dads will this City is doomed to continue the same path and untill Medicine Hat is placed back in Gods Favor as when Dad was in control and You can say what you want about Dad. To the Elders of this City
We have been commissioned to do a needs evaluation, and as part of this evaluation we are seeking input from organizations, churches and non-profit organization…That is interested in a joint venture to access the community’s needs. We feel that if we address your concerns…suggestions and co-operation based on you past experiences. And by Past experiences we are interested in failures and successes in these areas.
1. Do you think there is a need in this city for a preventive action program to be developed?
2. Does your Church or Non-profit organization practice community Outreach for the Homeless.
3. Does your Church or Non-profit Organization offer consoling for substance abuse problems
4. Does your Body coordinate with other outreach programs, in order to increase it efficiency and out reach potential.
5. Do you see any pitfalls in the operations currently addressing these needs that you feel should be changed…And How?
Do to the Burning down of the Central Block, there have been an increased demand on this City safety net, and with any system that is outdated, the moment push comes to shove it will cave in unless the foundation of that structure is based principals that God can Bless and protect.
Just cause the gas wells are over 2.5 hours away doesn’t mean that equipment and personal will be used from here. Operators are living in the area where these wells are. So no extra cost is there. Maintaining wells is all part of production. Starting up wells is not much extra either. Most oil and gas wells make roughly 1000 dollars a day roughly. If we get the right man in there who knows what he is doing and not some Harvard grad then the cost can be reduced to a min.
With a little luck this next election, the “wing nut fringe” with their narrow minded and bigoted views will be marginalized to the point of irrelevance so that the city will be able to operate in a more professional and progressive manner and actually get some “serious” community issues resolved or at least addressed.
Well crazyray I for one would like to get a grip on how the oil/gas field operate and apply it to council. The city just purchased for $120 million a gas field in the sand hills in Saskatchewan and due to environmental concerns can only run so many wells (not to its full potential)which to me is a bit of a waste. The city says they will get their money back but why buy something that can’t be used fully. Sorta like buying half a car is it not?
The biggest problem is the NDP in Saskatchewan. They are sitting on a huge goldmine per say. They are waiting for the time that is right when Alberta slows done and when jobs move from here to there.
One of the reasons why when the elections happen in Saskatchewan for provincial government you will most likely see the NDP gone. Once that happens see alot of work explode in that province.
Yes at the beginning when drilling in a location where grass is sacred, but it doesn’t stop from getting to it. They can lay down platforms to stop any damage to land. Oil companies pay huge fines if they drive off lease roads or out of bountries at the lease. In fact oil companies probably do far less damage then what farmers do while driving out there. If pipelines are brought in a huge deal is done to make sure the land on top is back to the state it was once at. Seed is put back on to add vegatation.
I would like to know the study on the purchase on excatly what we bought. Was any of it already drilled? If so what state are they in? Are they pipeline or not. Don’t forget that Saskatchewan has a huge sandhill (oil sand) twice the size as the one in Alberta
Alot of the oil companies already have remote offices in small centres in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Even though alot of these companies big out the work, alot of it is under charged. My friend was a engineer for an oil company, I got first hand knowledge on some of what is billed out as I worked there as well.
I find it very hard to believe that we are out of gas soon. There is so much that hasn’t been touched yet and still alot of drilling going on in this area alone. Just drive out into the country side and you can see drilling rig masts in the air. Jim you work out at the base you are probably aware of the work that is going on on the base range.
Thank you for the well thought out response, Jim.
I like your ideas, which for the most part, fall in line with my thinking.
If you need any help with your campaign, please give me a shout - squisshy@gmail.com
Hi Proximo,
Right now, our city government is in such a bad state that I feel in order to save this house we have to burn it to the ground. As such, I will not vote for anyone who has the slightest and remotest chance of becoming a CAPCS sympathizer. In no way shape or form do I think that CAPSC is the ‘face of religion’. I realize that like in all walks of life there will be good Christians and bad Christians. However I will not put down a vote for anyone who even remotely smells like they will be a CAPCS sockpuppet. Anyone who mentions God, Religion, Church, Family Values or any other catch phrase that remotely sounds like a CAPCS catch phrase will not recieve my vote. And for the record no encumbant will recieve my vote either. Pro or against CAPCS, if you were on council during all this crap you either helped create this debacle or you didn’t do enough to stop it.
The full measure of a man is not by what name he calls God or whether or not that person even believes in a higher being, but by his actions. CAPCS, city council, and many people attending council meetings have stomped all over personal rights and freedoms and have as a result effect on the livelyhoods of many. Things that are really none of the cities business, like the adult material bylaw, and even going back as far as denying the doll house the ablity to set up shop in the old hitching post has cost people money and jobs, and has wasted valuable city council time that could have been spent ensuring utlities don’t skyrocket and brining in new industry (and by the same token jobs) to the area.
And Jim, I’ve got to disagree about the gas wells. In this day in age, I’d have to think they will eventually prove to be a decent investment, so long as however the city didn’t pay 3 times the going rate for them (which I wouldn’t actually discount the possiblity of).
HH knowing anything that the city buys has probably been paid to much for. They did it with the generators at the powerplant. So with the gas fields who knows. As long as the market is high and demand is high we could easily remake our profit off it. Depending on how much we sell to the outside market. With the lost of the methanex plant that took alot of revenue away for the city on utilities. We need something to offset that loss so that we can maintain a low utilities as we did in the pass. Canadian Fertilizers and Cancarb can’t do it all.
You guys live in an illusion, but thats ok, it shows in the panic in your comments. But you see the Truth is coming out , and you can talk till your blue in the face and your pulse sits in the danger zone. I on the other hand put my concerns into prayers and Believe in the promises I have been Taught.Look for something that everyone thought was nothing while God anoints it to replace something everybody thought was something. Why does he do things like that so that there will be no doubt that its Gods super on our Natural. You see the first gift you get from following God will is Peace that surpasses all understanding and I see Medicine hat being raised up where God has reserved it a special place under the Protection of Davids Line
If we live in a illusion then Jerry your delusional. I would hope you run for some sort of position just so we can hear you splat off your mouth and people can tell you to shut up in the polls by not marking anything by your name. I think I can speak for most people in here that nobody cares what happen with harry veiners will dated in whatever month and year it happen.
I really don’t care if someone is religious or not. As long as they don’t have no hidden agenda. Or going to preach on some street with a bedsheet on with a shaved head.
I was told that when talking to people never bring up religion or politics. Bringing them both up in the same conversation is 10 times worse. Fights and wars have started and are still going to this day.
//will not comment on Jerry Veiner, pardon my complete and total lake of political correctness but giving him a verbal smack down is like booing at the special olympics.
Anyway, I should clarify. I don’t really care if someone is christian or not. If a candidate makes sense the way the good Mr. Ogston does then if I find out this person is a christian then they’d still get my vote.
But if someone is going to start saying things like ‘family values’, ‘morality’ and such I’m going to stay far, far, away. All of those things sound nice but coming from capcs and city council they have been metaphors for ‘we don’t like what you are doing, so we’re going to make sure you can’t do it, and we want everyone to believe exactly how we believe’.
lol geee thanks HH I just booed great lol Oh well I still felt good about it. Someone had to do it and well I just had to say it.
I imagine that it did feel good, but I don’t think it will sink in and I doubt that it will do any good.
lol probably not, probably not lol
In this city, when people run for office, like alderman, like HH says, there is always someone with the morality issue or the family values issue. Is our city that screwed up that we need morality police, someone to tell us what we can or cannot read, watch or listen to. NO.. I, personally am getting damn tired of someone telling me what I should be able to read, or look at. I am referring to CAPCS, if you have not figured it out by now. In any forum, there should be a question brought to the candidates about their stand on the CAPCS issue and how they feel. None of the mediator crap, straight to the point. NO BS ALLOWED. I think the previous council and its supporters have wasted enough of our tax money. It is time to come to the table people. Know who you vote for. And remember, you do not have to vote for 8. Only one, if that is how you feel.
lol Thanks for the chuckle hopple head and crazyray.
Re: 47
Good post, Hart.
Thank you, thank you very much I’ll be here all week. Squisshy no problem on the chuckle. We all need one from time to time.
CR, It was good. Everyone needs some humor now and then. Like you said, in previous posts some time ago, Maybe we all should be smoking what he is.
I think it would be cool if there could be a blog of some sort set up for the municipal election candidates. The general public could pose questions to them as I did with Jim, and they could post their answers.
Perhaps people would pay closer attention if they could sit in the comfort of their homes and read through, or post their questions online.

medhatblog intends to offer that exact opportunity to candidates who want to participate. A different kind of political debate.
Great post #47 btw - couldn’t agree more.
Having experienced 2 election attempts (2001 and 2004) I offer this insight into these so called forums/debates. Each time there were two forums held where the candidates “meet” the public. The Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce sponsored the first forum during both election periods, one session for the mayoral race and another for the alderman. In 2001 it was held at the Medicine Hat High School Theater and in 2004 it was at the Medicine Hat College. The second round forum was often sponsored by an interested group. In 2001 it was held at the George Davidson School sponsored by the Southridge community (they..the Southridge community… were interested what the city planed for their area with an interest in the now new sports center later built there) and in 2004 it was held at the Hillcrest Church?(the one south of the Holy Family Perish in South Ridge) by interested groups there. In the church forum of course the question of values and religion came up.
In 2001 due to the large number of candidates (36) the aldermanic forum was divided into two nights with half one night and the other half the second.
The candidates have 3-5 minutes at the start to state their name and ambitions, 3 min to answer questions given them and then 3-5 minutes at the end to reiterate their intentions or sum up their rhetoric. The vast majority always used the introduction portion to pat themselves on the back, state their church practices, family history, work history and what organizations/credentials they have or participate in. To my recollection few to none state their goals/platform on what they intend to do if elected other than the generic topics. The incumbents are not challenged on their past performances nor are the questions given do so which I view as necessary. If they did nothing on council this should be pointed out and therefore allow the public to decide if they did or did not perform as expected.
These forums are unfortunately not “debates” as I feel they should be. Perhaps those that will be organizing the forums this election will allow constructive debate to happen. The issues are too important ignore and if the public is to know who they need to vote for and who are the frivolous candidates that are in it only for themselves and personal agendas will be exposed, in particularly the CAPCS supporters.
In the 2001 election I challenged each and every candidate on a major issue I foreseen as a foreseeable issue (and did happen) and all but 2 of the 36 answered (none of the elected) and in 2004 I again challenged the incumbents record and they again ducked the question/challenge.
I would there for applaud anyone who will challenge the candidate because after all these are the people you let decide the fate of our city. If DangerMouse and his partners of this blog can set something up and get all of the candidates to participate fantastic. But I also suspect the incumbents will cut and run as in the past. Dumanowski for one will not answer not defend his dismal record and rely on name recognition/signs only.
And in closing …yes the moderator in these forums shift through the questions and often weed out the “hard” questions and allow unimportant ones to be asked… like…what do they think about the 911 attacks.
With so many candidates and so little time lets have the important questions on city affairs brought forward that way if the audience has to sit through a long debate at least their important questions will be answered. One question of interest asked last time was where does John Hamill live? Elkwater or Medicine Hat. Is that important? I leave it to you.
I would be interested in seeing which candidates would support the changing of this existing useless system of selecting civic representation in favour of a ward system. The idea of voters having to try to discern any useful information from a cluster **** of 36 candidates is ridiculous.
So Jim, where would you stand on this issue?
How would you, if you were so inclined, work to address this issue if elected?
What would need to be done to bring about such a change in the political arena?
I think they’ve came up with a way to try to keep the number of candidates down this time. I believe, until now all you needed to run for any office was the small registration fee and the ability to write one’s name on a piece of paper. As a result there were all kinds of nut jobs with nothing better to do than to run for alderman on the ballet. One year didn’t someone run on the platform that if elected he’d build a dome over Medicine Hat? I think now you have to X number of credible references, which should keep the number of candidates down to a managable dull roar.
Believe it or not (I say that because Del Egan called me a one issue candidate) I had just over a dozen goals/concerns/platforms on my election pamphlets (handed out and hand delivered to almost all the city homes by family fiends and members) in both elections (2001/4) stating where I stand, whereas many of other challengers both new and incumbent listed 2 or 3 or, incredibly interesting, listed nothing. Those that read them would then know where I stood.
One item I listed was looking into a ward system for the city (Smith did as well) but only if it warrants such an implementation, and my reason is this.
1. Is the city big enough to make it a viable option?
2. How will the zones be decided? And how many alderman / zone
3. What powers will they have and what issues will they have an effective say in.
4. Could/would there be a pool of interested people in those wards willing to run for council. I.e. the Flats or the Hill. (none of the current aldermen live in these areas) And would that be the case in the following elections.
Keep in mind that all of the aldermen regardless of their ward zone will still have a vote in capital projects and procurements for city operations be it the utilities/arenas/fire-police issues and the like. The ward system is beneficial for an area like say the Flats and the other low laying flood plains areas that are constantly being flooded and the city not acting to protect them. The ward occupants may be able to vote their alderman out in a following election if said person loses favor but remember the reminder on council still have the vote/power to make an unfavorable decision on a city issue that the zone in argument have issues with. This works well in a large city but would it be suitable here. What I like about a ward system it makes those council members accountable for their actions. Would a recall option be possible? With the system we have now one positive point is that we would have ability to boot the whole council out and not just one or two but there would have to be a better election process where the candidates are debated and in some way forced to state their goals/platforms etc and then if running for re-election be force to defend their record or in the case of this present council, lack there of. This city votes mainly on name recognition regardless if they know that person did well or not…..and this needs to be changed to make them more aware who has the personal agenda and who does not.
So Yes I do favor a ward system but it needs to be studied to make it along with the election process work effectively to give the citizens their rightful voice. Larger zones with 2 or 3 alderman running in each zone?
HH
No money is required to register (Cocks wants a $100 fee) and 25 signatures on the regestration forms(was only 5). I feel anyone has the right to run and no fee but the election itself needs to be run better to expose the self interest from the dedicated.
OOOOPS Sorry …..Fiends should = friends…make one slip could spell disaster
Aug 9 - Possess God’s Rest
“There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God….Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.”
(Hebrews 4:9,11)
Dear Jerry,
God’s rest. Considering the hectic, busy lives you and I live that sounds like a pretty good thing to have, doesn’t it? But exactly what is that rest? And how do we enter it?
The third and fourth chapters of Hebrews compares God’s rest with the children of Israel taking possession of the Promised Land. That land was to be a place where their every need would be met, a place of freedom from their warring enemies, a place no one would ever drive them from again. All they had to do was go in and possess it. But something kept them from it: unbelief and disobedience.
As believers, we, too, have the opportunity to enter a Promised Land of abundance and peace. A land where we can rest from our struggles and enjoy the victory of God. To enter it we must do what the children of Israel failed to do. We must simply trust God and obey His voice.
How do you come to that place of trust and obedience? By getting to know your Father. By spending time fellowshiping with Him in prayer and in the Word. That is the labor that will bring you into His rest!
I’ll never forget when I first discovered that. I had been learning the principles of faith, striving hard to do them. It seemed back then that keeping doubt and unbelief out of my heart was difficult. Then, one day, I began to labor to know the Father instead of just knowing about Him.
When I did that, He began to reveal Himself to me. He gave me glimpses of His heart, His nature and His love. As He revealed to me how much He wanted to do for His children, it changed my striving into peace, my doubt into trust, my fear into bold obedience. It enabled me to enter His rest.
Get to know your Father. Work at it. Make it your “labor.” He has a Promised Land of rest that is waiting for you!
Scripture Study: Hebrews 4:1-11
I don’t think that there is anything wrong with a registration fee or a specified (reasonable) number of endorsements on a registration form in order to demonstrate the legitimacy of a individuals interest and viability to run as a candidate. Especially given that us collectively as taxpayers are the ones footing the bill for the costs.
Jim, as per the “Accountability” for council members, that is precisely what needs to be addressed in this city’s governance.
To Clarify the comment about me being delusional. I agree but it is environmentally induced. It is my belief that when Jack Austin had Dads December 9 1980 on the grounds that will was the wishes of a senile old man. Thus creating a Deviation of my dads intentions for this City. My Beliefs are based on his promises. And whether you like it or not you will see that I’m right
Anarchenisis
I would have to agree with you without a doubt on accountability. Leadership is the linchpin when it comes to a municipal government because some of the checks and balances that are in place at the federal and provincial government levels are not in place at the municipal level and therefore the leadership of the mayor must be strong and not like we have had over the past 6 years. As a federal employee I have to submit a request to Ottawa to two separate agencies indicating my intent to run for office (all levels) to confirm there is no possible conflict of interest while running for and serving as an elected member in council (no less that 30 days prior to election nominations). Those who work in the private sector do not have those guidelines and therefore it is up to the mayor and the fellow alderman to insure there is not conflict.
Municipally a conflict of interest becomes an issue if there is a possibility of financial gain to family members. Instances like family members sitting on committees where other members serve as a city official are permitted at this level of government (not federal/provincial) as long as there is no pecuniary gain. Morally and ethically this is wrong but permitted but again not at the higher levels of government.
I would like to see the municipal government act changed/amended making it a conflict of interest regardless if money is gained or not. Or at the minimum a local bylaw enacted to that effect. Even the perception of a conflict of interest is enough to corrupt a process at the get go. This conflict of interest was instrumental in many of the turmoil’s in the past 6 years in cases like the adult material bylaw, the proposed magazine bylaw, the CCDA, the arena steering committee, and others.
The mayor knew of these conflicts and did nothing. The aldermen in question and also their fellow aldermen also knew and did not raise the question on the morality and ethics of such acts. This one alderman in particular played the grey areas of this conflict of interest flaw to the max and got away with it with the indulgence of a leaderless mayor, and was morally and ethically dishonest, but as said is permitted at the municipal level.
In the 2004 election I had on my platform, the need for political Ethics and Ethos in council and will do so again in this election. Hence accountability by the mayor towards his aldermen or the aldermen towards the mayor. If elected, I for one would not hesitate to hold fellow council members publicly accountable for their actions, and expect the same in return. Strong leadership with no strong arming as well.
I am sure most of you here will agree that this caused the corruption of council and rendered them ineffective for the past 6 year.
“I am sure most of you here will agree that this caused the corruption of council and rendered them ineffective for the past 6 year”
I know I agree with you…
TBird, nice to see you joined the blog..I was concerned as you with CAPCS, i wanted to know and I got ahold of Schneider, he was what I would call a good man, he said he did not even know of CAPCS, before he was asked to think of running. I believe him, he is young, and is actually got a good grip on the city issues. I have read the comments and I think you should talk to him before you rip him apart. I felt he will represent my concerns, and I dont believe he has harm in his heart. I hope that might have helped you out. One thing he does have a good team working with him, making sure they got the facts. I was impressed. I feel I am not easy to impress, Im older and wiser, and feel you can trust him. My wife was impressed with him, he cared about our family, and my sons in university. He has worked with our people in the past, he understood our ways. That tells me he is a good man, does not speak with a forked tongue. I have seen many politicians do this, and the ones you need to watch, is Grimm and Cocks both are in it for their own agenda.
Being around in the days when Ty Schneider tried to play robo cop, I wouldn’t vote for him if he was the best of the worst.
As to his honesty, I guess that would all depend on whether or not you’ve personally conducted business with the man.
Squisshy: It sounds like you and I have been around a long time in this city and have a lot of the same ideas about people and the upcoming election.
Squisshy, you seem like a twisted person, you might untighten the panties and get some air. I join the Blogs to be constructive not destructive, why are you so negative, I have read you past comments on everything and you live a very negative life. I have lived for 70 years and have learned you have to let go sometimes. You should question why Mr Grimm does not talk about the car lot issue, or maybe some of the bad deals he made for the city, I see Jim might run for Alderman, I might give him a hard time, but he is at least taking the time to research. Squisshy maybe you should talk about the funding we need downtown for our center, our people need the money to keep the doors open, come down and give us some, help us out.
hahahahahaha If you think you can get to me by personally insulting me, you are sadly mistaken, SPIRITRIVER.
You talk about putting the past in the past. Out of the other side of your mouth, you want me to question Grimm about his past.
So which is it?
I shall put your advice where I think it belongs, thanks!
Hart - yes, I think so too. Odd how you weren’t branded with the ‘negative’ sticker too.
You know Squisshy, I do not care if I get branded with a negative sticker or not. Spiritriver says he is constructive not destructive, to me personal insults seem destructive, do they not.
All I do is consider the source.
I wont vote for Ty Schnider either. Not worth it.
SPIRITRIVER not only personally insulted me, he made negative comments about both Grimm and Cocks. On the other hand, Ty Schneider is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I didn’t just fall off the back of a turnip truck. Something is off here.
On that note, I’m off.
Have a good one!
It saddens me that in this day and age, in our enlightened society. We could well be giving the keys to City Hall, to the Taliban, next election day.
Yeah I have been here for 32 years and I must say yeah I wouldn’t vote for Schneider either. I don’t trust him at all. I’m curious on spritrivers post that he said that Ty didn’t know nothing about CAPCS at all. When has he finally heard of them. He claims it was a short time ago. I been on the road since 2001 and I have heard of them back in 2003. I don’t trust Schneider as fas as I can throw him. He was one of those cops that I have a badge, I got a gun listen to me punk or I’ll make my day. I would still vote for Grimm if it was between Grimm, Cocks, Schneider. I would rather have someone make a personal profit and make money on some land. Then some hidden group within the city council dictating their hidden agenda for them. Like Spider says we could be giving the keys to city hall to people that could do real harm to the city. I truely would hope someone like the chief of police or Larry Godin run for mayor.
“I am sure most of you here will agree that this caused the corruption of council and rendered them ineffective for the past 6 year.”
I would agree to that. And considering how some businesses in the city were basically given free reign and some were handcuffed and outright shut down I personally wonder how much money was being passed under the table.
It seems to me that when Spiritriver talked to Mr Schneider, he said that he was unaware of the CAPCS organization before he was asked to run in the election. Well If we look back in June of this year, in Election Rumour Ramblings, post #28, He was asked about CAPCS by Starbucks19, and it seems to me that from the post he was fully aware of them and their stunts. It almost seems to me that lately, he may be only saying what someone wants to hear, and maybe give the impression that he is not affiliated with CAPCS. Maybe he also has a personal agenda that could be fullfilled with a seat in the mayors chair if he was to win. In my opinion, I won’t vote for him because all his talk seems to be doublespeak, and I would not trust him as far as I could throw him. Ex cop carries no weight when it comes to the election and my vote. Forked tongue, Maybe.
Aug 10 - A Living Example of Love
“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
(Romans 5:5)
Dear Jerry,
Don’t ever worry about not having enough love inside you. The Word says God’s love is shed abroad in your heart by the Holy Ghost. God’s love is in you. What you need to do is make a decision to let it flow.
Pray this prayer today.
“In Jesus’ Name, I make a fresh and strong commitment today to live the life of love, to let the tenderness of God flow through me and heal the wounded hearts of those I meet.
“Father, teach me to love even when things go wrong. To be patient and kind when the children are underfoot. To overlook the spiteful words of an angry spouse. To rejoice when someone at the office gets the raise that I thought I needed. Teach me to talk in love, to lay gossip quietly aside and to take up words of grace instead.
“Lord, Your Word says that Your love is already inside me…that it has been shed abroad in my heart. So today, I resolve to remove every obstacle that would keep that love from flowing freely into the lives of others. I put resentments behind me, and I forgive all those who’ve done me wrong.
“In the days ahead, cause me to increase and excel and overflow with Your love. Cause me to be what this world needs most of all…a living example of love. Amen.”
Scripture Study: 1 John 4:7-17
I choose to be Delutional if that is defined by trusting God for the big things as well as the small details in his perfect plan
Aug 12 - A Supernatural Cycle of Blessing
“Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.”
(Ecclesiastes 11:1)

Dear Jerry,
One of the most exciting things I ever discovered about God’s law of sowing and reaping was the fact that financial harvests are not seasonal. If you plant year round, you can be receiving year round.
Don’t misunderstand. I’m not saying your harvest will come instantly. It usually won’t. You may have to wait for it for several months. What I’m saying is, if you’ll keep planting consistently, you’ll receive just as consistently. If you’ll continually cast your bread on the water, eventually it will come in on every wave!
Of course, some people never get to enjoy that kind of constant blessing. That’s because, instead of giving, they keep waiting to receive. They stand on the beach saying, “I wonder where my prosperity is? As soon as it comes in, I’ll start giving.”
God’s economy doesn’t work that way. He said, “Give and it will be given to you again. The way you measure it, it shall be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38). You have to make the first move. You have to send a ship out before your ship can come in.
Think about that next time you’re tempted to complain about the things life brings your way. Remember that whatever you’ve been casting out there is always what you find on down the road. If you’ve been giving doubt, unbelief and fear, that’s what has been coming to you. If you’ve been giving nothing, then nothing is what you get.
You’re holding the seeds of your own future in your hand right now. Step out in faith and use them to put the supernatural cycle of blessing in motion. Start now planting one good seed after another. Eventually you’ll enjoy a good harvest every single day!

Scripture Study: Luke 6:31-38
Well Its monday Morning and with all the things happening in Medicine Hat the Civic Election is trickling into motion. From my understanding Bill Cox ’s Hat was the first hat thrown in. I know Grimn was thinking about it along with maybe Ty Sneider and Norm Bouchard. Quite frankly I am perplexed as to run on the ground that was set before by prior candidates, and by doing so exerciseing my rights quaranteed by the Charter and at the same time agreeing with this electoral City Of Medicine Hat as valid. Because of Jack Austins acts in relation to my Dads will dated Dec 9 1980 and its conections through non-profit organations and monies and real properties from the trust account set up for the child that should prove himself Eligible as mentioned in Part V of that said will. and the fact that these facts seem to trigger procedural breeches as mentioned in my attempts at having a Public Inquirey to investicate these concerns. You see I have already tried running in an Election were I followed Garth Vallely in the Debate at the medicine Hat College and said if I was Really Harry Veiner Son as Mention in that will. that the last 20 years of Medicine Hat is corruption and the Funds operated and controlled as “the Community Foundation are the results of manipulations contray to the Fundementals of Justice. And Judge Detric Brand and Stephenie Cleary action that have tried to discredit me in hopes that all the Bad luck sinks any atempts at completing Dads plan for Medicine Hat that were planned in that will that was thrown out. So I think that this City can’t continue with all these strkes against it. You Can go through the process of an election but it has no validation if it is an abuse of process. Watch my sites for the technical details that show all the paper work to support my request to have an Public inquirey before we can have an election that will hold up in Court.
Aug 13 - Heart to Heart
“For who has known or understood the mind(the counsels and purposes) of the Lord so as to guide and instruct [Him] and give Him knowledge? But we have the mind of Christ, the Messiah, and do hold the thoughts (feelings and purposes) of His heart.”
(1 Corinthians 2:16)
——————————————————————————–
Dear Jerry,
Isn’t it exciting to realize that you can hold the thoughts and feelings and purposes of God’s very own heart in your heart? Isn’t it thrilling to know the Creator of heaven and earth wants to be one spirit with you and transmit His thoughts to your mind?
First Corinthians 6:17 says that when you were joined to the Lord you became one spirit with Him. He came into union with you so that He can talk to you heart to heart. God wants you in this harmony with Him so that His thoughts can become your actions. He wants you to walk so closely with Him that you never lack power to overcome the evil of this world. He wants you to be so in tune with His Spirit that you are able to feel His heart of compassion toward those around you who are hurting or bowed down with sickness and pain. He wants to be one with you, so He can reach out through your hands and fulfill His purposes in the earth.
Make a fresh commitment today to walk in union with your God. Give your attention to His Spirit in your inner man. Determine to yield to His voice and not to the voices of the world or the flesh!
Allow the mind of Christ to flow through you!

Is there really a need to fill the various threads with repetitive scriptures? It’s nice you found god but to the rest of us viewers (myself in particular) really get tired of the same endless postings. It is very annoying.
Second that!
Third and forth it. What a way to ruin a good thread.
I heard on the radio this afternoon, that police chief Mr. Boucher, threw his hat into the mayors race officially.
I’ll 5th and 6th that. Now back to our topic now. That is great news that Boucher has threw his hat into the mayor race. Now I won’t have to vote for Grimm lol
You guys really need to SIT and SMELL THE COFFEE for a moment. For those of you posting on here with a pre ampted angenda which is most of you, keep to yourselves, Zip it and dont even bother opening your pie Holes. For the rest of you, here it be…
Ted Grimm did an OK job when he was in, however it wasnt fantastic and yes there are many pro’s and con’s that could be attributed to his past. In my humble opinion, he is to old, out of date and new blood is required where Grimm is concerned hands down. Do we really want to pay for 24/7 ambulance service to city hall for when he collapes and needs his wheel chair. Really though. I think you get my point.
Bill Cocks - No SIGNIFICANT business expeirience, public service history or anything to really grab and hold onto and say… ” Cocks is the man”.
In my humble and personal opinion, I also take issue to someone of the of the ” alternative lifestyle” sitting in the mayors. We need a straightshooter. Not someone caught up in alternative lifestyle drama like a hormone crazy teenager. Cocks is NOT the man or woman for the job.
Chief of police Boucher, public service sure, what about business experience? How is he going to get Hatters out of this $ 330 million dollar debt? What background in Financial success does he have? Is he going to get his advisors in City Hall to help him out? YA RIGHT!!! You either have it or you dont!
Crime…… sure…. maybe he could do a good job there. He was chief of police right? even though he hasnt done enough as chief of police so far… right or am I wrong? Crime and drugs still a problem in the Hat? Why would he do anything different on our streets as our mayor if he wouldnt take care of business as chief of police? He’s not going to folks. Get it through your thick skulls already. So what is he going to do for our citizens then? next….
Tyrone Schneider…. Ex city Policeman, yes… Robo cop as stated above… maybe… I dont know, I was never arrested by him previously…. were you? Does anyone think that drug dealers, pimps and thugs deserve to be treated kindly? Frankly I hope he was a Robo Cop to these kind. Tyrone broke his back as a police officer putting his life on the line for our people. He has a track record of being in the trenches trying to ACTUALLY clean up our city. Have any of the other candidates? Maybe, but unlikely.
Schnieder was one of the founding individuals of our local food bank many years ago. Doesnt that count for something. He actually cares for our city and those in need when he didnt have to.
Schnieder has an extremely successful track record as a local entreprenuer and businessman creating a number of unbelievably financially successful corporations.
Tyrone is NOT affiliated with ANY religious or fundamental organizations whatsoever. Schnieder is actually a concerned citizen who wants to see his city flourish and grow, not flounder and drown as its doing right now.
Frankly, this race really comes down to two people.
Grimm, past mayor with parkinsons and serious concerns should be given as he is one of The Hats older senior citizens….
Or Schnieder
Ex Cop who almost lost his life defending our streets
Significant care giver to our city in many ways including, but not limited to one of the founders of our local food bank
non agenda based, straight talking and shooting man of his word who GETS THE JOB DONE NOW!!! NONE OF THIS CITY HALL BEAUROCRATIC BS WAITING MONTHS TO MAKE A SMALL JOB INTO A BIG MESSY FEDERAL SORT OF DEAL.
Extremely successful local businessman who will put his financial managment and success to work for our city.
Schnieder is the next Klein in my opinion. Hands down. He wont please everyone, however he will bring Med Hat to where it needs to be in a short period of time. Some people may be offended on route, however in the end, we will all be better off.
I think if you accurately compare all the cadidates, Schneider by a long shot brings the best of all worlds to the table and has a track record of getting it done succesfully. You cant argue with the cold hard facts, however Im certain a few of the insecure posters online will undoubtedly attempt to refute my comments. Dont believe me…. watch and read what comes next……
PS. They are going to use every excuse in the book to justify why I am wrong and why they are NOT refuting my comments and why they are saying what they are saying. Enjoy watching them squirm folks.
Blazingnines
Still only your opinion. The way you brag him up he sounds close to a god of some sort.
It is just my opinion, Its also the facts. Hes not perfect, he is just a man, however a very good strong, straight shooting and successful man at that. I actually think he is the man we need this term. We have a lot of things to get done and they need to be done correct and NOW! Why not give him a shot? Honestly, who else is there?
We will just have to wait and see what is on his platform, and whether or not he can be the save all to end all. Who knows. Maybe he can’t be any worse than what we have had in the last six years along with the other super 8 in the glass house. Time for a change all around.
Blazingnines are you 100% sure he isn’t part of CAPCS at all? I have heard from a couple sources that he is. Unless you are married to the man how do you know he isn’t. I rather take my chances and not have him in if he is or isn’t with CAPCS or have Boucher who is accountable on budgets with the police force. The Police force is run just like a busniness and as Chief of it he is held accountable. I think he would do just as good as Mayor as he did as Chief of police.
I see another member of the Schneider cheering team has surfaced.
pre ampted angenda
What exactly is a pre ampted angenda?
Zip it and dont even bother opening your pie Holes.
Last time I looked, Skeet owned this board, not you. How rude of you, but then I expect nothing less of the Robocop cheering team.
I was never arrested by him previously…. were you?
Nope, but I know a few who were and they weren’t drug dealers, pimps or thugs.
Does anyone think that drug dealers, pimps and thugs deserve to be treated kindly?
Policemen live by a code of conduct. Unless their lives are in harms way, they are not allowed to use unnecessary force.
Schneider was known for pushing people around. It’s why he was beat up. One night he pushed the wrong guy and it went too far.
Have any of the other candidates?
What do you think Boucher has been doing all these years? Sitting with his thumb up his nose?
Schnieder was one of the founding individuals of our local food bank many years ago.
If true, yes it does, but I won’t take your word for it. I will look into it.
Schnieder has an extremely successful track record as a local entreprenuer and businessman creating a number of unbelievably financially successful corporations.
Unbelievably financially successful corporations hmmm?
Name them and what was their bottom line last year?
Tyrone is NOT affiliated with ANY religious or fundamental organizations whatsoever. Schnieder is actually a concerned citizen who wants to see his city flourish and grow, not flounder and drown as its doing right now.
So do we which is why were are here asking questions. I believe all the candidates have the best interests of this city and it’s citizens at heart. Doesn’t mean that their vision is ours.
Lastly, one’s sexual orientation has nothing to do with anything. Negating Bill Cocks simply because he’s gay says a lot about you blazingnines.
CrazyRay, Scneider is not backing ANY fundamentals or ANY groups whatsoever! The Guy is flying Completely SOLO. Tired of the City going to hell financially and criminally. Has a family here, has many friends and his corporations. Wants good things and future for his neighbors and family. Ty is as straight as they come. He is the type to scoff at these kinds of fruitcakes and tell them to get lost. He is clean…. He is THE NEXT KLEIN!! I think you will see.
Squishy…. Its not my job to satisfy your every inconsolable nuerological issue. Rather than trying to punch holes in Schneider with slander and untruth, which indicates that you do already have a pre-agenda for another candidate, Why not just stick to the cold hard facts about ALL the candidates. Their are other OK candidates, however I believe Schneider to be the man for our city this term. He brings the most benefits by a long shot to the table. Sounds like you actually work for one of the other guys. Your questions are very pointed and looking for dirt. You know, if you knew anything about business, you would just do a nuaons search and find out about Schnieders prior businesses.
Also, if you knew so many people that were arrested by schnieder so many years ago when he was a policeman and they WERE NOT BAD people as you say, ( Im innocent officer, the devil made me do it, my dog ate my homework, He told me to do it) What kind of person are you to be hanging out with those sorts? Are you involved in the criminal element? Does anyone know if we can have SQUISHIES IP checked out and report him? Thats right, the policeman Schneider was the bad guy and not the criminals he arrested… SURE Squishy??????
meth anyone?????
Hey Hoople Head I got a challenge for you with that crack about the special olympics below although I feel its an insult to those less Gifted and pride does come before a fall. Lets see if you have the IQ or the guts to face me old school Medicine Hat youve got a choice
1. Chess Board at the Libary out side for all to Judge.
2.Or Dads style Cow Milking Contest
If you are indicitive of a Ty Robocop Schneider suppporter, I don’t need to say another word.
You come in here telling us that Ty Schneider is nothing short of St. material and you provide nothing to back up what you are spewing.
If you want to toss our rhetoric, be prepared to back it up lady, errrrrrr, or are you the 70-year-old who claims to have children in university?
Great comedic material if nothing else. hahahahahahaha
And if you want Chess we can arrange it Right away. As for the Milking contest I will have to leave it for God to put the final touches on those arangement and let this be a test that dont share my opinion expressed in the following pasage For we know in all things that God is working for the Good for those that Love God and for those called according to his purpouse. and Hoople Head God can even use you for his purpose whether you like it or not. Thats why hes God, and by the way I am a pretty Good Milker that was one of the things Dad made shure I knew how to do ask Wilf or Alice Mayer they were hired as my Teachers
The comments about Bill Cocks in post #86 are utterly ridiculous…if you are reflection of the kind of campaign Schneider will run that forget it…if you want to choose not vote for Cocks because of lifestyle, so be it, but “man or woman” comment crosses the line.
However, to come on this blog and boast about Mr. Schneider while slinging mud at the other candidates does NOTHING to further your case for him. Schneider may be a great candidate, but you are not helping him out with your personal insults.
So much for a consensus eh?

Aug 14 - Don’t Underestimate Your Prayers
“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”
(1 Timothy 2:1-2)
——————————————————————————–
Dear Jerry,
That verse is clear, isn’t it? The instruction is plain. Yet even in these tumultuous days when our nation is so desperately in need of God’s guidance, most of God’s people don’t do what that verse commands.
Why not?
I believe it’s because most of us are overwhelmed by the problems we see around us. “How could my prayers make a dent in the national debt?” we think. “How could my faith affect foreign policy?”
In other words, we fail to pray because we fail to realize just how powerfully our prayers can affect this country.
It’s time we caught hold of that. It’s time we realized that if we’d just be obedient to 1 Timothy 2:1-2, there’s no council of any kind on earth, no king, no president, no congress, no anything that could overthrow God’s purpose for His people.
God has called us to intercede. He has commanded us to pray for those in authority. He has given us His Word, His power, His Name, His authority, and His faith. We have all the tools necessary to pray effectively for our government and its leaders.
I urge you to intercede. It is your responsibility as a believer to get involved in the affairs of your country. God wants this great land of ours, and the only way He’s going to get it is through His ambassadors, you and me.
Pray for this nation. Every day. And never again underestimate the world-changing power of those prayers.

Scripture Study: Daniel 2:1-30
I have to admit I wasnt reading this thread for the longest time. Good political debate is welcome - but posting slanderous accusations about candidates is not acceptable.
Please keep the discussion civil and becomming of a real political debate.
Please refer to the posting policy:
http://www.medhatblog.com/?page_id=31
you wouldnt say those things to a candidate if you met them face to face.
DangerMouse points out numerous valid points and I would like to expand on them. On the Nomination and Candidates Acceptance form there is no line for filling out age, sexual orientation, or personal medical category rating. The requirement to provide this information is none of the electoral populations business. Nor is it required for the candidate to list their employment experiences, affiliations or membership in any clubs/organizations. The voter makes the determination of who is right for the city by their platform and commitment to serving the people and not themselves. New candidates have a greater job on promoting themselves to said public while incumbents have the luxury of their public service record (or lack of) and in this city name recognition. Some considered Ronald Regan a good president yet he was in his 70’s and Kennedy as a dud and he was in his 40’s. The person is judged but their performance not by their age or lifestyle.
Grimm was not progressive which this city needs which is why I would not vote for him but was a strong leader and age not a factor. With Cocks I just don’t like his politics on issues past. With Tyrone Schneider and now Norm Boucher as candidates I look not at their police record but what they put on the table for the city. I had coffee with Tyrone on Wednesday past and had a good discussion and liked his intentions which I support but am hesitant to throw my support fully behind him. I like to run on my own merits having thrown support behind a mayor candidate in 2001 (Vallely) and got burned on other issues. I choose to sink or swim on my own. Leadership is a strong feature to have and I’m sure both have that ability. As to who has the ability to lead this city forward and control special interest groups intent on corrupting the process it has nothing to do about personality, orientation, age, church, or health but what is good for the citizens/businesses of this city young and old. If they are in it only to serve themselves then there is the door people. Get to know the candidates for their platform, and leave the personal attacks/slander at home.
Jerry, I’d love to debate you but so far you have presented nothing to debate. All you bring to the table is non sensical rants, googled scripture and a half assed conspiracy theory against you and your alleged parentage. So far all you’ve said is that the city is out to get you, the opinions of those who don’t pray are irrelevant and that you milk a fine cow.
Blazingnines, DM already covered it but I’ll say something on the subject as well. With all of Grimm’s previous faults and errors all you can say against the man is that he’s old? And while I’m no supporter of his your critique on Cocks is completely wrong. He isn’t just joe smuck off the street, he has business experience and he has experience in public service not to mention being a lawyer. As stated above, I won’t be voting for him because of his politics, not because he is under qualified.
I would say that your apparent lack of knowledge makes me question the shining endorsement of your candidate more than his detractors do.
As for who will win, well… I think we all know that this election will be decided by the seniors. Smith squeaked into council last election by what… 200 some votes? As I understand it (correct me if I’m wrong) she squeaked with some last second heavy leafleting of the seniors homes. Voter turn out usually runs at about what… thirty percent. I would like to see that broken down by demographics because I’m willing to bet that at least 80 percent of the population over 65 heads out to the polls. And considering we are a retirement town it’s no wonder Grimm with his less than progessive ideals has gotten elected time and time again.
This election sadly will be decided by the club sierra/good sam’s vote, and Grimm has and always will be their golden boy. That being said I still will head to the polls on election day and I will vote for the candidate I feel can get the job done. It may be a lost cause, but some would say those are the only ones worth fighting for. Last election several bar owners who were tired of city council’s bias lead by clugston spearheaded a campaign to get younger voters to the polls. Nothing worked, Smith still got in and you can’t tell me there weren’t 300 or more people in this city who would have liked to get rid of smith who didn’t show up to vote on election day.
Blazingnines: It almost sounds to me that you could be Ty Schniders campaing manager,( alias Robin). He sounds to good to be true. Maybe we should not have an election at all and just put someone with all those superpowers in as mayor and forget the rest. lol. Get off your soap box. Most of the people in this thread do NOT like the idea of Ty Schnider for mayor. And his police expertice does not seem to sit favorably with a lot of people who seem to know him from his police days. I have also heard that he is a CAPCS supporter with ties. That is enough to turn me off.
I have no problem with Mr. Cocks lifestyle. It is his life. Oilerman52 says it all, comments like that are uncalled for and they could possibly hurt your superman instead of helping him. I havent even heard that Ty is entering the mayors race for sure.
Squisshy: Just consider the source.
I have lived in this city for 23 years now and obviously dont care for the other candidates.
Ive seen enough of nothingness from these types for many years. We can either choose a good solid doer of a candidate with a solid proven track record…. or we can sit here, talk all day and bicker about this, that and the next thing.
Ty in my opinion is not going to burn down city hall as a couple of the others might, his office term can only help but reflect his professional attitude passion for our city and personal/business success.Honestly… Think about it. Me and my people will be voting for the better man.
By the way, how many of you voted for and thought good of the last mayor, SHAME ON YOU ALL!!! You shouldnt even be speaking up right now.
Time for new blood folks. Its time to get real and that means REAL changes for the better.
I agree with ogsten, The platform issues are the most important things to consider and slanderous comments should be left at home, however if you know and understand ANYTHING about human nature, its that whoever we vote into office as mayor, is only going to reflect how he or she conducts themselves in private. There’s no arguing that. If your a jerk in private, your going to be a jerk in office. I think Im making my point here. So, with that being said, private affairs and personal life DO ACTUALLY MATTER, no matter how much it may not be seen as something that should be taken into consideration when viewing the possible candidates up for pick. Like it or not, you cant change human nature or simply pretend it doesnt exist.
All Im saying is that all candidates need to be looked at carefully, privately and proffesionaly
Blazingnines. It sounds to me that you are still making reference to Mr Cocks lifestyle. Privately or professionally, his personal life has nothing to do with his campaing. Are you perfect? How about RoboCops private or professional life.
not refering to anyone, are you?
Me and my people will be voting for the better man.
That to me sounds like a CAPCS group for sure.
I have lived in this city for 23 years now and obviously dont care for the other candidates.
Ive seen enough of nothingness from these types for many years. We can either choose a good solid doer of a candidate with a solid proven track record…. or we can sit here, talk all day and bicker about this, that and the next thing.
Only because your posts are so over the top - what proven track record does Ty have? He has never held a public office for any period of time. He has, in point of fact NO experiance leading any governmental agency.
Just as public leaders dont always make good business people - business people dont always make good government types. We already elected a new mayor for the sake of change - Vallely had no experiance leading council, no experiance as an alderman (though he also had business experiance) and seemed to fall short in the leadership capacity. I am not saying that Ty would be the same, I havent decided yet how I would vote - but its pretty silly to make claims about a candidate that simply arent true. He has no track record leading a civic council let alone a ‘proven’ track record.
Ty in my opinion is not going to burn down city hall as a couple of the others might
What does that even mean? I dont think any of them would burn down city hall - our capable police service would quickly apprehend them for such actions.
By the way, how many of you voted for and thought good of the last mayor, SHAME ON YOU ALL!!! You shouldnt even be speaking up right now.
Odd because nearly all of the campaign reasons for voting for Ty would have been applicable to Garth before his first term.
1) New Blood
2) Local Guy
3) Local businessman
4) Passionate about the city
If we consider that voting based on this criteria was BAD last time, it makes little sense for you to claim they are GOOD now - and awefully contradictory to SHAME people for voting that way previously.
I wouldn’t burn the city hall down, but might paint it Red. If you don’t get that then go watch some of Clint Eastwood movies.
I do not have a problem with anyone coming on here and trumpeting their candidate. That is your right. However, the problem with your assertions about the other candidates, particularly Bill Cocks is that you have no facts to back them up. “Jerk in private”? What did they do for that to happen?
Perhaps you would like to elaborate and lay it out there (in specific and factualdetail), what you have against the other candidates , particularly Mr. Cocks. I am willing to bet there would be little “facts” or “details”…such is the benefit of an anonymous forum…
Is it just me or are you guys unbelievably ridiculous and pathetic. Nobody called anyone a jerk, I was making a point but you knew that. Forget I said anything.
You guys win, you outsmarted me, you outlasted me. Your smart, Im not and all that jazz. Nice spin guys. Im not wasting my time on here anymore. Good luck to your candidates. May the best man win. See you all in October.
Wow thats all it took.
You got it. bye
Talk about spinning…..
Rather than defend you words, you choose to take the easy way out. The next time you want to stop by, pull your horns in and act like an adult rather than a petulant child.
CR, that “me and my people” phrase got me as well. Sounds like some sort of conspiracy. What group are we talking about?
Squisshy: Yea, he took the easy way out, I knew he would. Too much negative carma for him. Cant handle it.
Blazingnines: It sure sounded like you were referring to Mr Cocks. And yes, I was referring to Ty (Robocop). How about his personal life. Oh, I forgot, you wont be able to read this because you are gone until October.
CR and Squisshy: I guess that is all it took. Good. I guess the Superman bandwagon just got a flat tire. lol…
kryptonite man kryptonite
I would like to see the next City Council set up a review committee to look at the Bylaws that were influenced by CAPCS. All of these Bylaws were voted in by a City Council influenced by, bad science, bad publications, bad studies and outright fabrications from right wing loonies. They should all be scrapped.
I would like to see that too Spider but I really don’t think it will ever happen.
Spiders comments are not as nonsensical as it may be because there are many bylaws that need to be reviewed to bring many situations (i.e. zoning) into line and a review is warranted with the latest council farce now on the table. Namely the Youth centre issue.
With the blog readers indulgence I wish to explain because this issue is fast exploding into issue that amplifies the incompetence of the present council and their attempt to “pass the buck” onto the next council at the expense of our youth. With am election fast approaching you readers be they the average Joe or the media need to be aware what this council has been up to and become informed so as to determine whether any of the council is deserving of re-election or not.
For years some have questioned (including my wife) why I will not let the issue of the adult material fiasco die as it is done and over with. My answer is this….To me the issue was never about “Porn” but about councils dealing with this issue and that this level of incompetence had the potential (and it has so happened) to permeate into other issues.
This incompetence has appeared on other occasions but in the latest instance it has once again used “youth” as the crux to pass a zoning bylaw amendment. This council has once again insisted on pitting business/public against the youth and vise versa in an effort to cover up their backdoor screw ups.
What is unsettling is the director of the Youth Action Society is playing a line from the CAPCS script book of “either you’re for us or against us or if you’re against us you’re against the protection of our youth” towards council to get them to bend to their needs…
When this centre lost their lease to their past location, they went looking for a new location and were given permission to locate in the former retail spot next to the old Dots location. The conundrum is this permission by Graham Kelly (as chair of the Municipal Planning Commission) was not his to make as council has to approve it (a written not verbal application) beforehand due to a zoning stipulation in said bylaws.
Problem #1: Without this approval the Society continued to make modifications/renovations to the store with the hope it will go unnoticed by the city/businessmen (this was freely admitted to by a staff member to a local business owner who shall be nameless to prevent possible repercussions to their operation) so the seeds of corruption as in the adult material bylaw were sown.
Problem #2: Interesting enough the last location occupied by the youth centre was also not in compliant with the zoning bylaws as is the new location but it along with other possible operations have been approved by past councils by plan or by oversight. Therefore Spiders comment of a review of past bylaws is not out of line even if not inspired by CAPCS. To do so would open another can of worms for this council and their desire to change the use of a zoning designation would cover-up their mistakes and attempt to exonerate Graham Kelly’s committees screw-up to the expense of course of the local business owners.
Problem #3: This “illegal agreement” now opens the door to possible lawsuits if the “request” was turned down. So councils attempt to deflect such actions and a hope that the problem created will fade away or at least become the problem of the “new” council (pass the buck) shows this council should not serve a day past their mandate and those that presently hold office should not seek another term since none of them have challenged this ineptitude.
No one is against a youth centre and the directors attempt to draw attention to the public about the local businesses anger towards this slight of hand approach by both council and the Society is again typical of tactics presented by CAPCS. And again I say this is a continuation of the pattern of incompetence and dismal leaderships. It becomes insulting and offensive to me that groups will use our youth as pawns to cover up their blunders and therefore question their legitimacy.
The businessmen are made to look like the bad guy, the youth the victim and council comes out smelling like a rose (or cow dung). These same businessmen are tired of this treatment and have increased their dislike for the City Centre Development Agency (CCDA) and feel they need to be allowed to op out of said agency if they are not being represented despite having to pay a head tax (and forced) to be a member.
Where is the leadership? (Answer: nonexistent)
Stop the corruption, get to know the candidates in the next election, and send any incumbents packing.
Sorry for any grammatical errors.
Comments?
Does anyone know anything about this new person to run for mayor? Sorry, cant remember his name at the moment.
hey Hart I think the person was Scot Boyd I think. don’t quote me on it though lol
Yes CR, that is his name. Thanks. I looked it up in the paper after the post. I just wonder if anyone knows anything about him?
Nope don’t know nothing about him at all. I like what he said though on when they introduced him on the radio the other day. Although those are just words though. Not knowing his background though still makes me wonder who he is though and what he really stands for. I could say everything that he said about the time spent on CAPCS etc etc etc, but would you still vote for me though. I know next election time if things don’t improve I would very seriously consider running for Alderman.
I just heard that Ty Schneider is not running for mayor. He will be running for alderman and he is now supporting Ted Grimm. I believe this is a huge turn of events, because everything you hear is that Ty was against Grimm’s former policies and was for fixing the issues that plague the development of our city. Well neither of these two gentlemen will get my vote
I heard that Schneider won’t be seeking the mayor’s chair as well. I also heard that he isn’t running for mayor because he knows he can’t win. I haven’t heard anything about an aldermanic seat.
Regardless, whether he runs for alderman, mayor, dog catcher, or head sanitation engineer - he will never get my vote.
head sanitation engineer lol whats wrong with driving a honey wagon lol
Now Squisshy and CR, I do not see how you would not vote for Superman/Robocop.(lol) According to some he might just be the savior that we have all been looking for. Maybe he would look good on a sewer sucker also.
I can’t believe that anyone would not vote for Ted Grimm. He is the only one who has done anything for the City and its residents since Harry V. I hope everyone thinks seriously about who they are going to vote for Alderman. One person I know of is a very dishonest person, he lies cheats and tells people what they want to hear. More to come later.
Let me guess, you are voting for Ted. You know that is the thing about democracy, you can vote for who you want. In previous posts, Robocop was the savior, now Ted Grimm is going to keep Medicine Hat from going to hell in a handbasket. He is a good man, but I dont think this election is his time. Things have gone too far in the last six years and even he is not going to rectify what has been done.
